New domains coming soon!

Would you like a new domain name extension for your website? What are we talking about? Well with the web ever increasing in size its been decided to introduce some new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) so rather than just .co.uk or .com etc you’ll soon be able to choose from a huge new selection of domains, such as .plumbing or .clothing, but do we really need them?

Some cynical people out there might say introducing lots of new TLDs is just an opportunity for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to make money from businesses who already own a .co.uk forcing them to buy another domain for their chosen business sector. But there are others who might see this as a great opportunity to get a domain that exactly matches their company name, perhaps something newer businesses couldn’t do when they first set-up as another company already had the .com.

Either way these new generic Top Level Domains are on their way. Businesses who have trademarks are already able to register and those without are able to pre-register their interest. By the end of January / early February anyone will be able to buy one of the new domains, they are a little more expensive than .co.uk at around £100 (approx) but this is apparently to try and stop anyone just buying a domain to sell on at a profit later.

So what new gTLD’s are there?

There are literally hundreds but to give our customers some ideas how about these:

.plumbing
.clothing
.accountants
.pub
.restaurant
.beauty

If any of our customers are interested in pre-registering for one of these gTLD’s or finding out if your industry has its own we’ll be happy to help you, just give us a call on 0845 544 2626 or email us at support@simplywebsitesupport.co.uk.
